Aboriginal Acknowledgement
As we come to gather we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We commit ourselves to actively working alongside Aboriginal people for reconciliation and justice.
Dear Parents,
Recently we welcomed Spring and as we leave Winter behind we tend to feel re-energised and reinvigorated ready to tackle anything! As we become aware of the signs of the new life of Spring bursting around us, we are reminded of the love, life and energy that are the gifts we receive with each new day. Let us embrace each day as an expression of God’s love for us.
What has happened before in our lives is all passed.
What we had been and what we have done belong to yesterday.
What we are and what we can be - with God’s help - is our TODAY.
One day at a time - this is enough.
Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone;
And do not be troubled by the future, for it is yet to come.
Live in the present and make it so beautiful, it will be worth remembering.
It is God who enables us to smile in spite of tears;
To carry on when you feel like giving in;
To pray when you are at a loss for words;
To love even though your heart has been broken time and time again;
To sit calmly when you feel like throwing your hands up in frustration;
To be understanding when nothing seems to make sense;
To listen when you’d rather not hear;
To share your feelings with others because sharing is necessary to ease the load.
Anything is possible because God makes it so.
Life is a series of beginnings which bring us closer to the realisation of our dreams
Father,
Let every day be a dream we can touch,
Let every day be a love we can feel,
Let every day be a reason to live.
May Spring be a time of renewal and hope for each of us.
Father's Day Thanks
We hope all of our father's and father figures had a great Father's Day on Sunday. We would like to thank our families who bought gifts from the Father's Day stall. The funds raised from this stall go to the Friends of the Carmelites who support the work of the Carmelite nuns.
Lismore Race Day Gazetted Holiday - Thursday 24th September
School will operate as normal on Lismore Race Day. However, be aware that there will be NO CANTEEN due to this holiday. Please ensure that your child has sufficient food for the day. Buses will operate as normal on the Race Day Thursday. Thank you for your support in this matter.
Poetry and Public Speaking
We are going ahead with our Poetry and Public Speaking competition this year, with some minor changes. Each grade will run their own competition, rather than Stage based as we have done previously, with the rest of the grade as their audience. Teachers will decide on the grade winners and a prize awarded to each winner. Due to the current situation the Inter-School Poetry Public Speaking Competition will not be taking place this year.
This revised format will still allow our students to participate and gain experience in this important skill of oral presentations.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to have parents at this event this year.

Professional Development Days
Just a reminder that we have a Professional Development Day (PUPIL FREE DAY) on Friday, 25th September and the first day back at school next term, 12th October. Active Kids will be operating on these days if you wish to take advantage of this service. Go to the Active Kids tab on our School Website for information on how to enrol and make a booking. We thank you for supporting us in our Professional Development opportunities.
Student Pick Up and Drop Off
Student safety is always our first and foremost concern here at St Carthage's. We have been noticing a few issues with drop off and pick up of students and wanted to provide all parents with a friendly reminder about our pick up and drop off procedures.
Before and After School
The following areas have been designated as safe areas for the children to be dropped off before school and to be picked up after school:
School grounds:
Parents may collect children from the school grounds. Children will wait on the Library steps for collection. This should lessen the confusion and temptation that some children have to play on the playground equipment when the bell rings. Parents, this equipment is out of bounds until the Cathedral Line and the first Bus Bay Line have moved off. However, no child should be on the equipment at any time if their parent is not supervising them.
Please do not pick up and drop off students on the driveway access to the Visitor and Staff Car Parks (located off Dawson Street).
Cathedral grounds (preferred option):
Children being picked up from the Cathedral of an afternoon, line up with their hat on, near the Year Three buildings. Teachers will escort them, via the underpass, to the Cathedral. All children are asked to walk in an orderly way.
A “Drive-Through” operates as outlined below:
Cathedral Pick-up and Drive-Through Guidelines
- All children must sit on the grassed area and wait for parents to collect them. (No children are to run off to meet their parents).
- No parking in the middle grassed area of the Cathedral grounds.
- ONE WAY TRAFFIC only.
- The Drive-Through-Lane is only for parents of children who do not need assistance getting into cars. Parents, please do not leave your car. Teachers will direct your child/ren to your car when it is time and safe to do so.
- NO CHILD is to enter a car from the right hand side of the vehicle when using the drive-through.
- If your child needs assistance, parents must park in the “Pick-up Parking” area on the far side of grounds and walk over to pick up your child.
- All pedestrian access via Cathedral steps and paths. Please do not cross in front of queuing “drive-through” traffic.
- Vehicles exit “Pick-up Parking” area on inside lane of Drive-Through queue (see diagram below).
- Parents in Drive-Through-Lane have RIGHT OF WAY.
- Please do not block driveway access to the Presbytery, Parish Office or Priest’s residences.
- Parents who need to park and collect children may wish to stagger their pick up time until after the initial rush.
- At 3:40pm any children still waiting will walk back to school with the supervising teachers.
- In the event of wet weather or a funeral at the Cathedral, children are to be collected from the Library steps.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Please do not double park on Leycester St. (immediately in front of the Kinder- Year Two building)
- Trinity Catholic College Car Park - Children walking over to the Trinity Car Park or Trinity Swimming Pool, line up with children going to Bus Bays 17-20.
- Visitor/Disabled Car Park - Between 8:30am-9:15am and 2:45pm-3:30pm use of the Visitor/Disabled Car Park outside the Administration building is restricted to only parents or students entitled to Disability Parking.
DO NOT PARK: Parents are asked to avoid blocking bus zones or private driveways and are not to park in the Police Youth Club Car Park, the Service Station Car Park or the Staff Car Park including the driveway access (located off Dawson Street).
School Bus Procedures:
When school finishes children are to leave their classrooms and assemble in designated Bus Bay waiting areas on the school grounds as follows:
- Bus Bays 1-3, 4-6 & 7-9 under the Library;
- Bus Bays 10-12, 13-16 & 17-20 in the quadrangle (undercover area near canteen if raining).
Children who are walking home, walking to Trinity or have other arrangements line up with Bus Bays 17-20, walk out the gate accompanied by the teacher and walk to where they are going.
Bus children will be supervised by the teacher on duty until they get on their bus. Under teacher supervision, students will walk in an orderly manner, down the ramp to the crossing on Leycester St.
- The children are to wait at the white line until told to cross by the Crossing Supervisor.
- Children are to walk across the pedestrian crossing, keeping on the crossing marks and inside the small islands.
- Children are to go immediately to where they line up:
- Some assemble at the barrier fences ready for their buses
- Some assemble near their bus bay
- Children are to stay in the Bus Bay area at all times
- In wet weather children should be in the bus shelters and must be wearing wet weather gear.
- Children are not allowed to go to the service station, McDonald’s or Trinity Canteen before or after school.
School Speed Zones
The 40km/h school speed zones operate across NSW at all school sites on gazetted school days (including school development days). Motorists should drive no faster than 40 km/h through school zones. Most school zones operate from 8 to 9.30am and from 2.30 to 4pm on gazetted school days. Visit Transport NSW for more information.
See the Traffic Management Plan for the 40km speed zones around the school.

Notice for Year Three Parents
Dear Year 3 parents,
Joanne Hall, Education Officer Mathematics K -12, Diocese of Lismore, is currently undertaking the unit EDCP601 Capstone (a research project), as part of a Masters of Education (Mathematics Leadership) at the Australian Catholic University. The purpose of the research project is primarily for the purposes of assessment for the course not for publication purposes. The project aims to analyse the existing Diocese Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) data captured in February from 2018 - 2020 for the students that are currently in Year 3. The data collected will be de-identified prior to analysis and stored securely for the duration of the project.
If you have any objections to the use of your child’s de-identified data in this research assignment, please contact your child’s teacher.
Warm regards
Jo Hall

Visible Learning - Year 4
Bump-It-Up Walls
Year Four have been using Bump-It-Up Walls as a visual scaffold to support students with their persuasive writing this term. Bump-It-Up Walls help teachers communicate clear learning intentions and help students develop their thinking skills with a visual reminder of what success looks like and how to get there.
The purpose of this scaffold is to show students that through self-assessment:
- learning is iterative - it gets better with feedback and successive attempts
- improvement is possible
- work can always get better
- students look for ways to improve and never settle for the first attempt
When students achieve CLARITY from deconstructed learning intentions and co-constructed success criteria, they are able to give and receive feedback to amend or revise their own work.
Blood Donations
To meet the needs of Australian patients, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood need 10,383 more blood and plasma donors over the next two weeks, especially in New South Wales. Sporting Schools
St Carthage’s were successful in receiving a Sporting Schools grant from the Australian Sporting Commission. This grant was used to provide a 5 week sports program for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. Additional funding was used to replace sporting equipment in the school.
The students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the program. Although the external providers are only within our school for 5 weeks, the benefits of these programs extend this short time period. Students are able to develop a range of skills that are transferable across sports. In addition to this, teachers are able to receive professional development within a specific sport and are then able to deliver it to their class in the future.
As a school we would like to thank our Rugby League (Kindergarten), Cricket (Year 1) and Tennis (Year 2) providers.
Tennis Holiday Clinic
On Tour Tennis will be holding holiday clinics at Lismore Tennis Club. Please refer to the attached flyer for additional information.
Poetry Week
Welcome back to the leaders lounge! Recently students of all ages presented poems to their classes in the hope that they would make it to their grade final. We trust that all students had a great time presenting and listening to some amazing poems, as well as public speaking.
The bar was set extremely high in the Year 6 final as all students blew their peers and teacher’s away with their amazing public speaking skills. A big thanks to those who sat and watched their classmates do their poems and speeches without a complaint, it was greatly appreciated as it took a lot of the pressure off the poetry and public speaking finalists.
Interviews
Mia O'Reilly - “I wanted a funny poem that was also able to entertain and also I enjoy making people laugh. I liked doing the poem that could entertain people but also enhance my speaking skills”
Charlotte Howcroft - “For public speaking I wanted to find something that was an issue that I could address with power and realisation” said Charlotte. “I think it definitely addressed a problem and informed people. I also needed to use oral speaking skills.”
Congratulations to all who are now competing in their grade finals and we wish you all the best of luck. We know you’re going to nail it!
