Dear Families,
Today is the Feast of St Joseph. The Bible tells us nothing of Joseph in the years after the return to Nazareth except the incident of finding Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41–51). Perhaps this can be taken to mean that God wants us to realise that the holiest family was like every other family, that the circumstances of life for the holiest family were like those of every family, so that when Jesus’ mysterious nature began to appear, people couldn’t believe that he came from such humble beginnings: “Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary…?” (Matthew 13:55a).
Nothing is known of St Joseph except what is said of him in the Gospels. He was a carpenter; he accepted the will of God; and he supported Mary and brought up Jesus. From the human character of his son we can see that he was a good and responsible father. He is widely venerated as a patron of artisans who honourably do good work with the gifts God has given them, and of workers in general. To those who exercise the role of an adoptive parent, whether formally or informally, whether over one child or as the support of a whole family, he is a source of inspiration.
The Pope has declared that 2021 is the year of St Joseph. Pope Francis said he was establishing the year so that “every member of the faithful, following his example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfilment of God’s will.”
The Church observes the passage of time through the liturgical calendar - which includes feasts such as Easter and Christmas, and seasons such as Lent and Advent. In addition, however, popes can set aside time for the Church to reflect more deeply on a specific aspect of Catholic teaching or belief. Past years designated by recent popes include a Year of Faith, Year of the Eucharist, and Jubilee Year of Mercy.
Why did the Pope declare a year of St. Joseph?
In making his declaration, Pope Francis noted that this year marks the 150th anniversary of the saint’s proclamation as patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX on Dec. 8, 1870.
Pope Francis said the corona virus pandemic has heightened his desire to reflect on St. Joseph, as so many people during the pandemic have made hidden sacrifices to protect others, just as St. Joseph quietly protected and cared for Mary and Jesus.
“Each of us can discover in Joseph -- the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence -- an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble,” the pope wrote.
He also said he wanted to highlight St. Joseph’s role as a father who served his family with charity and humility.
Today we celebrated St Joseph's with a school mass in our school hall celebrated by Fr Bing. We thank Fr Bing for his continued support of St Carthage's.
A big thank you to Mr Tickle for preparing the Mass and to Mr Collings and his Year Six choir for the beautiful music.
The Big Veggie Crunch
Thank you to our families for supporting the Big Veggie Crunch at school today. It was great to see pour students happily munching on veggies as we participated with schools across NSW to break the record for the most students crunching vegetables.
The previous years totals were;
- 50,260 students crunching simultaneously (2018 record)
- 14,991 students crunching at other times over Vegetable Week (2019 record)
We will let you know if the record was broken when we get this year's total. Thank you to Mrs Rogusz for organising this event for our school.
School Photos
Thank you to our parents and caregivers for preparing your children so well for school photos last week. The students arrived looking smart in appropriate school uniform ready for their class and individual photos.
Anzac Day
ANZAC Day this year falls on the first Sunday after we return from holidays. We are awaiting advice from the RSL Lismore Sub Branch about our participation in this special day.
Professional Development Day - Reminder
Staff will be involved in a Professional Development Day on Monday, 19th April. There will be no school for students on this day. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
NAPLAN Practise
The NAPLAN practise will be on Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th March for Year Five and Thursday 25th only for Year Three. All students will require their own headphones for this practise. If these could be sent into school prior to this date it would be much appreciated.
In advance of taking NAPLAN online, students, teachers and parents are invited to use the public demonstration tests to familiarise themselves with the type of questions and related functionalities available in the NAPLAN Online assessment.
Some of the key features include a range of question types, onscreen tools, timers and interactive navigation. Students are encouraged to try all the tests for their year level to practise the complete range of question formats available in the online assessment.
To access the demonstration site please go to: https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
NAPLAN Withdrawals
NAPLAN tests are a routine part of the school calendar. However students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer if there are religious beliefs or philosophical objections to testing. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers in consultation with their child’s school. If you wish to withdraw your child/ren from NAPLAN testing please contact me and I will send home the form for you to complete and return to school. This needs to be done prior to the first NAPLAN test date (11th May 2021).
News from Mr Condie
Some of our Kindergarten jarjums have been busy doing artwork with Mr Condie. The great work will be displayed in the office. Well done to everybody.
On Thursday, our Indigenous students had a visit from the Indigenous students from Trinity. They spent some time together during lunch getting to know each other. The hope is that these visits will continue throughout the year and great connections will be made with our students and Trinity.
St Carthage's Primary School Chaplains
Fr Alex and Sr Ines have been appointed school chaplains at St Carthage's Primary School. Fr Alexander Munyao, originally from Eastern Kenya is the Assistant Priest in the Lismore Cathedral. Sr Ines, originally from the Philippines is a Carmelite Sister. They will be a visible presence of the Church within our school, strengthening our connection with the St Carthage's Parish. We are very fortunate to have them within our school and on behalf of the St Carthage's Primary School community, I welcome them.
Fr Alex and Sr Ines will be invited to the school to assist with learning experiences within the classroom as well as retreats, Mass and other religious celebrations. They will work alongside our teaching staff to enhance the Catholic culture of our school.
Sr Ines attended our school on Wednesday to discuss the importance of Caritas - Australia. She explained how we as a community can reach out in love to support those in need. The students were excited to hear about the Philippines and what school is like for the students during the COVID pandemic.
St Patrick's Day
St Patrick is the patron Saint of the Diocese of Lismore. St Patrick is known for spreading Christianity in Ireland during the 5th Century. A man of courage, strength and faith, he sets a positive example of how to follow Christ. His three leaf clover was his tool for teaching about the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and the Holy Spirit).
The Solemnity of St Patrick was celebrated on Wednesday 17th March. A sea of green overtook the school. Our casual clothes fundraiser brought in an astounding $727. Thank you for supporting this fundraiser!
CARITAS
Over the final two weeks of term the students will continue to learn about how Caritas Australia helps those in need.
Week 9
Week 10
After the St Patrick's Day fundraiser our school has raised over $1350. This is a true testament to how as community we can come together to help those in need. What an amazing community to be a part of!
Over the final two weeks students are provided with the opportunity to raise funds through the Caritas Cross Country or place money in the mission box. Together, we can "Be More".
Solemnity of St Joseph
On Friday 19th March we celebrated the Solemnity of St Joseph. As the husband of Mary, Joseph played an instrumental role in raising Jesus. He was a courageous man; strong, brave and trustworthy.
We celebrated mass as a school for the first time in over a year. The students reverence and participation was remarkable. The students should be extremely proud of themselves and I know that staff were buzzing with pride. A special thank you to Mr Collings and the Year 6 Liturgical Choir for leading us in mass. Thank you also to our Year 6 Colour House Captains that volunteered to read.

Sound Waves Spelling
The focus sounds for the following two weeks are:
Sunshine Online
All families have access to the online e-reading resource Sunshine Online.
This resource can be used by parents at home as a library for their children to practice reading. It also includes activities and skills based on skills such as phonics, comprehension, fluency and vocabulary.
Username: stcarth20 Password: school123
Kindergarten have been working hard on becoming independent writers. They have started learning their sounds and sight words and are using these to 'have a go' with their writing.
The children start with drawing a picture about their idea so they can refer to this as they are writing.
Area of focus for this term are:
- I can think of my own idea
- I can start my sentence with a capital letter
- I can use finger spaces to separate my words
- I can use the sounds that I know to record what I hear
- I can use sight words that I know
- I can re-read my writing to make sure it makes sense
- I can end a sentence with a full stop
Upcoming Dates

St Carthage's Cross Country
The recent wet weather is playing havoc with the scheduling of St Carthage’s Cross Country. With the Diocesan Winter Trials being moved to our original cross country date, we have been forced to change our event to Wednesday the 31st March (not the Thursday as previously advertised). If you are a parent helper that; offered to help on original date and now can/can’t on new date or you would like to volunteer to help on the new date, could you please email Mr Collings at luke.collings@lism.catholic.edu.au. With the forecast for more rain over the foreseeable future, it is possible that you will be hearing of yet another change.
As mentioned in the previous newsletter due to easing restrictions we are excited to invite parents to attend our cross country. It is important that all spectators adhere to social distancing and COVID protocols while in attendance.
The day will commence at approximately 9:15am and conclude by 11:30am. The Cross Country will be held on our school ovals and the adjacent grounds of the Lismore Rugby Club. If your child qualifies on the day, they will then be invited to participate in the Richmond Zone Cross Country Carnival to be held in Lismore Friday 30th April 2021.
Students are required to wear their sports uniform to school (colour house shirt). Prior to competing in their event, they may change into running shorts and suitable footwear (no spikes permitted). It is important that all children bring their school hat, water and any necessary medication (i.e. Asthma puffer).
Records were made to be broken…
Karate
On Friday 19th March, Sensei Ari and Sensei Lachlan from Miyagi Kahn Karate held sessions for Year 3 and 4.
"There are only three times that karate should be used; in the dojo, practising at home and for self defence" - Sensei Ari.
What an awesome experience for our students to participate in. If you would like further information about enrolling your child in karate please refer to the flyer below.
