Dear Families,
Last weekend we celebrated the great feast of Pentecost. The Church celebrates Pentecost (so called because it is fifty days after Easter), as the day on which the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, gathered in an upper room with Mary, mother of Jesus, "as a mighty, rushing wind", fulfilling Jesus' promise when he "breathed on them", as recorded in John's Gospel (Chapter 20). This event, which marks the beginning of the Church, is recorded in the book of Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2. The liturgical colour for Pentecost is red, a reminder of the flames that "rested on them". Another symbol for the Holy Spirit is the Dove, usually emitting golden rays of light. The Holy Spirit gave the apostles gifts of grace through which they would undertake the evangelical mission of the Church. On the day of Pentecost, the apostles were given the miraculous "gift of tongues", so that everyone from every country understood the Christians’ inspired message of salvation as if they were hearing it in their own languages. Thousands were converted by the preaching of Peter and the other apostles.
The Solemnity of Pentecost ends the Easter Season. For centuries, the Sundays of the Catholic Church year between Pentecost and Advent were numbered as "after Pentecost". Since the Second Vatican Council, this period is called "Ordinary Time" (the first period of Ordinary Time is that between the Epiphany and Lent). Three Solemnities are celebrated in the weeks immediately following Pentecost: Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ) and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
As parents, you have given life to your children and are their principal educators. It is in the family group that Christian values are first instilled and Christian attitudes formed. As you took your children to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, it is your role to walk with them as they continue their initiation into the Church through the reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation, Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Last night, we celebrated Confirmation in our Parish, and this gave us the opportunity to reflect on our own Confirmation and personal faith journey. In this Sacrament, the Holy Spirit calls, helps and co-operates with us in our efforts to become witnesses to Christ in our family, school, workplace and community. It is an effective sign of God’s presence and activity. It is a Sacrament of process, of change and growth. It is kept alive by the way a person, with the help of the Holy Spirit, tries to overcome negative forces in their lives.
‘Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful
Kindle within us the fire of your love
Send forth your Spirit
And we shall be created (and even re-created)’
We continue to pray for, and congratulate our Confirmation candidates who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last night.
Bicentenary Mass – 200 Years of Catholic Education in Australia
Our National Mass for the Bicentenary of Catholic Education was held in Lismore last Monday.
This celebration coincided with numerous other venues across all diocese within Australia.
Guests, school principals and student representatives from across the Diocese attended this very significant event that was held in the Cathedral.
Our School Captains, Maude Webster and Andreas Pereira, attended the Mass and lunch that followed.
This day reminds us of the significant role Catholic Education has played in education across Australia.
World Support Day
Last Monday we celebrated World Support Day. This was a great opportunity for us to say thank you for the great job that our support staff each and every day to support our students, teachers and families. We are so grateful to have these wonderful people on our staff.
National Sorry Day
On Friday we gathered as a school community for a service in recognition of National Sorry Day. Observed annually, National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as 'The Stolen Generations'.
We thank Mr Condie and our indigenous students for preparing and leading our prayer service.School Reports and Interviews – advance notice
School Reports will be sent home on Friday, 18th June (Week 9) and interviews with teachers will be held in Week 10. We will again be using the online booking format for Parent/Teacher interviews and more information will be sent home with the Event Code and a reminder on how to book these interviews electronically in the near future.
Kindergarten Enrolments 2022
Parents of children who are ready to start school in 2022 are asked to fill out the online Enrolment Application so that we can begin the enrolment process.
Please pass on this message to family and friends who are intending to enrol children in Kinder next year. Children must turn five by 31st July 2022 to be enrolled in Diocesan schools.
Covid Guidelines Updates
It is important that schools continue to follow the COVID-19 Guidelines. CSNSW wishes to highlight the following:

I Got spirit!
On Tuesday, 18th May, Year 3 and the Confirmation Candidates from Year 4-6 participated in a retreat called I Got Spirit. The students explored all things Holy Spirit; the fruits, gifts and Pentecost. Students from the Senior Ministry Team at Woodlawn and the Youth Ministry Officers helped to facilitate the day. They added a vibrancy to the experience which ensured that the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you to the Youth Ministry Officers, Teachers and Senior Ministry Team students for your support throughout the day.

National Reconciliation Week & Sorry Day
Sorry Day is commemorated in Australia on Wednesday 26th May. It is a time for healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. On Friday, the Indigenous students led a Sorry Day Liturgy for our school. This gave us time for prayer and reflection. A highlight was the water ceremony, performed by Chloe and Audrey. This water ceremony was a sign of healing and cleansing. Thank you to the students and Mr Condie for commemorating this special event for our school.
As broader school community, we are challenged during National Reconciliation Week to explore how we can take action. Reconciliation requires more than words, it requires action. If we can all take action it will help to heal and foster love and growth within our community.

Spotlight on ....... Year Five!
Science & Technology
In Term Two, Year Five has been learning about "Earth's Place in Space". As part of this unit, students have been engaged in learning using a variety of digital technologies. Virtual Reality (VR) provides students with memorable and immersive experiences that would otherwise not be possible. Year Five used VR to venture into space, exploring the moon and the solar system.
Virtual Reality (VR)
Year 5 got to experience VR Technology. My favourite part was the headsets. I liked the headsets because you got to see what space would be like in real life. You got to see black holes, galaxies and we even walked on the moon. We also saw what it’s like in a spaceship. We got to see what the planets are like up close. The VR Technology experience was definitely one of the best parts of the year. I really enjoyed it.
By Kirra Fowler Class: 5TM
I really enjoyed using the VR headsets because you got to learn about many different facts about space. We learnt about black holes, galaxies and the planets in our solar system. It was really fun and I enjoyed getting to see everything in space and what it felt like to be on the moon and looking at lots of different galaxies.
By Ava Lane 5TM
Virtual Reality was fun because we could see everything in space and learnt facts that we didn’t know about space. Also when you have the goggles on, it feels like you're floating in space. I also learnt that when we were in the Lunar Module, it was very small and could fit a maximum of 3 people inside. We also learnt that if a human body got sucked into a black hole they would spaghettify and not even light can escape a black hole. Fun Fact: The sun will lose gas and will become a white dwarf star.
By Lucia Nilon and Eli Addenbrooke 5MS
What I liked the most was the Virtual Reality because it actually felt like you were in space but also through that experience we also learnt interesting facts.
By Zara Hellyar 5MS
Virtual Escape Room Task
The virtual 'Escape Room' was another digital-based task where students had to research information from NASA about the planets within our solar system. They then had to unlock clues in order to free aliens that belonged to each planet. This was completed via a google site that incorporated google slides and forms.
I loved the escape room because I found it fun decoding sentences and figuring out what planet matched each alien. I also found out and discovered a lot about the solar system and our planets.
By Hugh O'Reilly 5TL
I liked investigating the information about the characters because it helped us learn more about space.
By Archie Da Fre 5MS
What I liked about the escape room was entering the different NASA sites as they gave us lots of information that was presented in an interesting way.

All commented on the difficulty of the terrain and the strength of their competitors. Congratulations to Archie Sauer, Bryce Roberts, Zara Hellyar, Amirah Shah, Sammie Jones and Elissa Hills who have qualified to represent the Lismore Diocese at Eastern Creek on the 8th of June.
Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to every student who participated in our athletics carnival last Thursday. Like I said on the day, we all can’t be good athletes. But the effort, sportsmanship, house pride, competitiveness and smiles all around were obvious for all to see! A huge thank you extends to the many people who without their combined effort, our carnival simply wouldn’t run. It was great to see so many parents and friends at Riverview park for this event. Be sure to check out the St Carthage’s Facebook page for loads of pictures from the day.
Congratulations to our house winners; Cheering Trophy - D’Arcy, Novelties - Thomas, Overall Champions - Jerome.

NORTHERN RIVERS YOUTH ORCHESTRA IS BACK – CALLING YOUNG MUSICIANS
In the first week of the July school holidays, scores of young musicians from across the region will converge on the Northern Rivers Conservatorium to become the Northern Rivers Youth Orchestra 2021. The three day orchestral workshop will culminate in a finale concert at Lismore City Hall at 6:30pm on Thursday 8thJuly.
Now in its ninth year, after a Covid-enforced hiatus in 2020, the Northern Rivers Youth Orchestra 2021 program will extend regional music students by providing the opportunity to experience the social and educational benefits of playing together in a large ensemble.
